How to Calculate Water Capacity for Commercial Pools

If you manage a commercial swimming pool, you know that accurate capacity figures make chemical dosing, circulation, and equipment planning much easier.

Once you have the right measurements and formula, the math is fairly straightforward. Read on to learn how to get started.

Measure Pool Dimensions and Determine Average Depth

Measure pool dimensions at the waterline. Record the length, width, and water depth in feet and inches. Then, convert inches to a decimal and round to the nearest tenth of a foot. For example: six feet and six inches becomes 6.5 feet.

Does the swimming pool have a sloped floor? Measure both ends before using this average depth formula:

(Shallow-end depth + deep-end depth) ÷ 2 = average depth

That said, a pool running from three to nine feet has an average depth of six feet. Measure the water, not the distance from the deck to the shell.

Formulas by Pool Shape and How Many Gallons Each Holds

Your pool shape decides the formula. Measurements in feet produce cubic feet, which you can convert to gallons. Online pool volume calculators offer a handy second check.

Rectangular or Square Pools

Use this pool volume formula:

Length × width × average depth × 7.5 = gallons

The factor 7.5 keeps the math simple; one cubic foot holds around 7.48 gallons. With a five-foot average depth, here’s how common sizes work out:

  • A 40-by-20-foot pool holds around 30,000 gallons: 40 × 20 × 5 × 7.5.
  • A 15-by-30-foot pool holds around 16,875 gallons: 15 × 30 × 5 × 7.5.
  • A 16-by-32-foot pool holds around 19,200 gallons: 16 × 32 × 5 × 7.5.

Variable-Depth Pools

The average depth formula works for steady slopes. But for multiple slopes, diving wells, or broad shelves, it’s best to divide the swimming pool into sections. Calculate the pool volume for each, add the results, and confirm the total with a volume calculator.

Circular Pools

Divide the diameter by two to find the radius. Then, use the following equation:

3.14 × radius² × average depth × 7.5 = gallons

For an oval pool shape, use long length × short width × average depth × 5.9.

Kidney and Irregular Pool Shapes

Kidney, L-shaped, and freeform pool shapes require more work. Divide the outline into rectangles, circles, and triangles, then find the pool volume of each area before adding up the totals. Quick Conversions: From Cubic Feet to Gallons and Weight

Multiply cubic feet by 7.48 for precision, or multiply by 7.5 for a routine estimate. One gallon of water weighs around 8.33 pounds, so gallons × 8.33 gives its weight. For pool chemicals dosed per 10,000 gallons, divide pool volume by 10,000 and multiply the label dose by that number.
